Produit Dominique: How I set out to build Dominica’s first subscription box service

Introducing the Caribbean Delicacy Box: A Monthly Subscription for Local Goodies

Are you a fan of Dominica delicacies and looking for a way to enjoy them from the comfort of your own home? Look no further than Produit Dominique‘s Delicacy Box, a monthly subscription service that delivers a selection of local goodies straight to your door.

That was the premise for Produit Dominique, a subscription box service that allowed people from Dominica (both locals and diasporans) to subscribe to a monthly box filled with delicious local delicacies. Each box included a variety of items such as Coconut tablets, logas, coconut cheese, cassava bread, Cacao sticks, and more. These items were carefully selected and sourced from local producers to ensure the highest quality.

The idea behind the Box was to provide a convenient and easy way for people to enjoy and discover treats and foods that were enjoyed since childhood. The project also aimed to support local producers and promote the consumption of locally sourced food.

The subscription service was easy to use, in that a customer would simply sign up on the website, choose their preferred subscription plan, and start to receive their monthly box of delicious local treats.

Overall, the project was a great way for Dominicans to connect with their roots through food, while also supporting local producers and promoting sustainable food consumption.

Although the subscription box service was well-received…

… the project ultimately failed due to logistical challenges. Shipping to places Regionally or as far as the United States proved to be difficult and expensive, and as of the writing of this article, still is.

This made it difficult for the project to get off the ground. However, despite the challenges, the project provided valuable insights that can be used as a stepping stone for further ventures. And I can comfortably say that I am thankful for now being a little more experience in e-commerce, subscription-based business models, online payment processing, package design, and logistics.
